Mighty Roots Traditional Grind Kava

from $59.99

A strong and heady blend of 100% lateral roots selected from prized noble Vanuatu cultivars. These laterals (known as "waka" in Fiji) are the smaller diameter roots extending from the main rootstock. They contain the highest concentration of kavalactones and have a sharper, more bitter flavour profile. They're also richest in kavain, explaining the rapid onset and cerebral intensity of effects, while the use of balanced/heavy cultivars like Melo Melo and Borogoru provides this blend with a balanced finish.

In its natural form, Vanuatu kava rootstock is mostly stump/basal root, with laterals constituting just 20-30% of the weight. Despite being stronger, laterals aren't necessarily preferred in Vanuatu as they're harder to peel and hence more bitter. Since kava is consumed fresh and concentrated in Vanuatu, consumers don't mind the stump's lower kavalactone content. By contrast, in Fiji where kava is made from dry roots and heavily diluted, lateral roots are the most prized part and significantly more expensive.

We generally prefer the more "natural" ratio found in our Single Cultivar Kavas and Pacific Elixir blend, but for those seeking extra "kick," we've created this premium blend. Our laterals are processed from freshly harvested kava, meticulously cleaned and carefully dried in temperature-controlled dehydrators to preserve potency and freshness.

Not recommended for beginners due to its strength and sharper taste, but experienced enthusiasts of "waka"-type kava should be very pleased with this blend.

How to Use it?

This noble traditional kava powder requires straining (click here to purchase a high-quality strainer). We recommend using apx 30-35g per session, but note that each person requires a different amount of kava to feel and enjoy its effects. Detailed preparation instructions can be found here.
